Stream: FHIR AFRICA
Topic: DevDays
Rien Wertheim (Nov 09 2020 at 10:53):
For those from Africa interested in attending FHIR DevDays please contact @Grahame Grieve and ask for the code for a 50 euro ticket. DevDays runs from 17 to 20 November. https://www.devdays.com/november-2020/
Chris Seebregts (Nov 20 2020 at 16:34):
Thanks very much to @Rien Wertheim and @Grahame Grieve for making it possible for the team from Jembi South Africa to attend and participate in the 2020 FHIR Dev Days. Without your support, it would not have been possible for an African non-profit company to attend. It has been a wonderful and enriching experience. We look forward to continuing to work with the community to advance FHIR in Africa.
Rien Wertheim (Nov 21 2020 at 17:31):
Thank you Chris. I hope this has been the start of something we can continue and build upon. I'll discuss the follow-up with @Grahame Grieve
Hamish MacDonald (Nov 21 2020 at 23:01):
Likewise from The Sovereignty Network. @Grahame Grieve @Rien Wertheim . Thank you so much for the LMIC focus at this DevDays, and the discounts that made it feasible.
@olivierkarasira @Joanna Usifo @Pamela IZERE @Leona ISHIMWE (and @Hans Phenca in Indonesia!) have gotten such a lot out of this conference; meeting people, seeing what the community is all about, rubbing shoulders with leaders, learning more about how to apply FHIR as a technology that makes a difference.
They are also seeing the impact of their efforts not just in Africa, but as part of this global movement. Encapsulated well in this short (2:30) video that they put together literally in a few hours during the conference, from Rwanda to Burundi to Nigeria. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-0saUv-b9w And let's not forget our intrepid product innovator @Roheeni Bhana (herself originally from South Africa) who gets so much joy in working with our African team.
As @Chris Seebregts says, let's work with the community to advance FHIR in Africa.
Grahame Grieve (Nov 23 2020 at 12:06):
I'm glad that it was worth it. We'll have to figure out how to keep things moving.
Grahame Grieve (Nov 23 2020 at 12:06):
perhaps we should have an open call once a month for FHIR in Africa to keep us thinking about it?
Olivier Karasira (Nov 24 2020 at 04:43):

Great opportunity to monthly share all the small milestones we achieve.
Grahame Grieve (Nov 24 2020 at 05:22):
did that time slot we use last time work for enough people?

@Hamish MacDonald @Roheeni Bhana @Chris Seebregts @Nsikak Akpakpan @Pamela IZERE @Joanna Usifo @Leona ISHIMWE
According to me " Yes"
Rien Wertheim (Nov 25 2020 at 11:08):
Which time slot is that?
Olivier Karasira (Nov 25 2020 at 11:18):

9:00 AM - 10:00 AM ( GMT+2) and it was a Monday for me.
Joanna Usifo (Nov 26 2020 at 07:34):
Yes it did.
Pamela IZERE (Nov 26 2020 at 08:17):
Yes,it worked for me.
Leona ISHIMWE (Nov 26 2020 at 09:36):
Yes, it's ok for me too!
Grahame Grieve (Nov 30 2020 at 04:57):
ok, so let's do a follow up at the same time slot on Mon 7th. I'll send an invite to the same people, but feel free to forward to anyone else relevant
Grahame Grieve (Nov 30 2020 at 05:02):
anyone else interested in joining the meeting (9:00 AM - 10:00 AM ( GMT+2) Mon 7th) let me know by PM or email and I'll send you the invite
Rien Wertheim (Nov 30 2020 at 18:42):
I have a meeting but if it's a recurring meeting please include me in the invite, or share the notes. Thank you.
Grahame Grieve (Dec 07 2020 at 09:13):
quick summary for @Rien Wertheim:
-
the group was very appreciative of the opportunity to be part of DevDays. They found the content very useful and educational, and pointed them in new directions for tools, approaches, and relationships
-
there was a suggestion that there was still not enough opportunity to approach the speakers for follow up (this does happen a lot in person, but not so much oneline). I wonder whether there could office hours kind follow up for every speaker? Something to think about
-
the group found the Africa panel interesting and informative, but we would like any further panel to be more focused on technical/community development rather than policy level
-
we discussed holding a followup meeting for Africa, and tossed around some ideas for what it could look like. Some detailed follow ups:
- I'm going to talk to @nicola (RIO/SS) about using the FHIRStarter name for an online meeting for FHIR Africa. Would be fairly informal and free. We'll start thinking about dates and content
-
we'll plan to pair it with a connectathon around the subject of patient connection to HIEs using openHIE. @Hamish MacDonald and @Chris Seebregts are going to formulate a connectathon proposal for our next call
-
@Olivier Karasira still thinks that we need more patient/user focused material on line. Olivier, we didn't get back to discussing this during the meeting, so lets do that here. Can we piggy back on the series @Josh Mandel is working on?
-
We agreed to a follow up meeting in the second week of January. I'm going to talk to @Carl Leitner and maybe @Burke Mamlin and/or Sean Grannity about a time that would make it possible for them to join for the next call
-
Grahame Grieve (Dec 07 2020 at 09:13):
feel free to chip in if you think I didn't capture everything.
Rien Wertheim (Dec 07 2020 at 09:26):
Thanks for the summary Grahame.
Chris Seebregts (Dec 16 2020 at 08:11):
Hi Grahame. Thanks for this great summary. Just a small correction - the chief architect of OpenHIE is Sean Grannis (sgrannis@regenstrief.org). Regards
Grahame Grieve (Feb 23 2021 at 06:53):
@all I missed organising a meeting for last month, due to being too busy and offline at the wrong time. Shall we try again?
In terms of time zone, I was tasked to find a time more suitable for US participants. We had been meeting at 7am UTC (I think)
There's no suitable time, really, but the least worst time seems to be
- cape town 8am
- Nairobi + Moscow 9am
- US Pacific 10pm
- Melbourne 5pm
- Auckland 7pm
Unless anyone has a better time to suggest?
Hamish MacDonald (Feb 23 2021 at 07:13):
Welcome back Grahame! The suggested time is fine at least for me for next Monday. To confirm for all - this is March 1st for most of the world, but will be late evening on 28th of Feb for US participants, correct?
Chris Seebregts (Feb 23 2021 at 07:14):
Hi @Grahame Grieve Thanks for this. I can probably work around 8am UTC on a Monday if that is the day of the week we are selecting. But note that this likely won't work for some USA colleagues as it will be 3am EST on the East Coast (North Carolina, Indianapolis etc). 3 hours later may work better if Aukland is willing to meet at 10pm and USA East Coast at 6am?
Grahame Grieve (Feb 23 2021 at 07:19):
do we have anyone from US east coast?
Grahame Grieve (Feb 23 2021 at 07:19):
I can certainly do 3 hours later myself
Grahame Grieve (Feb 23 2021 at 07:19):
but we do have some potential contributers in US pacific time, which is why I didn't suggest that time
Hamish MacDonald (Feb 23 2021 at 07:20):
I don't mind doing three hours later than 7am UTC. For convenience, here are various global time zones at 7am UTC...

Hamish MacDonald (Feb 23 2021 at 07:21):
and here is 3 hours later...
image.png
Hamish MacDonald (Feb 23 2021 at 07:24):
And here is two hours EARLIER than 7am UTC - that actually suits the US better, if there are a number of US participants.

Chris Seebregts (Feb 23 2021 at 07:32):
I think Carl Leitner and Shaun Grannis are on EST, if we are still thinking of inviting them?
Grahame Grieve (Feb 23 2021 at 19:20):
yeah I'm not getting much response there
Hamish MacDonald (Feb 24 2021 at 19:40):
@Grahame Grieve just checking if will you presently be sending out a new invite for the Africa FHIR group next Monday with a (new) time of your choosing? (Given the above time ranges).
Olivier Karasira (Feb 24 2021 at 19:56):
@Hamish MacDonald @Pamela IZERE @Joanna Usifo YES , I can confirm Monday morning.
Pamela IZERE (Feb 25 2021 at 05:48):
Hello,Yes.Monday morning ,1st March works for me
Hamish MacDonald (Feb 28 2021 at 18:28):
Hi @Grahame Grieve , will you be sending out a new invitation today with a new time for the call (as above), or will the call be via the existing invitation, which is set for March 1st at 6pm Melbourne time, Australia?
Grahame Grieve (Feb 28 2021 at 19:16):
hmm, well, I've done exemplary work here. Sorry all. we'll stick with the existing invitation and tim, and discuss options on the call
Grahame Grieve (Mar 30 2021 at 06:54):
Time for the follow up call, but I can't do Monday - easter here and around the parts of the world
Grahame Grieve (Mar 30 2021 at 06:58):
so Mon 12th:
Cape Town: 9am
Nairobi: 10am
Australian east coast 5pm
NZ: 7pm
Moscow: 11am
LAX midnight.
Looking at this times, we could afford to go back or forward a couple of hours? Are people happy to go back a couple? If we do, I can get someone from HL7 on the call who has access to money for development projects for FHIR in Africa
Hamish MacDonald (Mar 30 2021 at 07:45):

That sounds like a compelling reason to take the call back a couple of hours!
Grahame Grieve (Mar 30 2021 at 19:53):
ok. so, 2 hours later
