If you

  • are a participant in the SANER track in the HL7 FHIR Connectathon
  • join the video conference line
  • are willing to turn on your web cam

then you can earn some money for the Dane County Humane Society.

For each unique pet that appears with a participant during one of our check-ins, I'll make a donation to the Humane Society. $10 for the first pet per participant, $1/pet for up to ten additional pets per participant.

Does a sourdough starter count as a pet?

view this post on Zulip David Pyke (May 14 2020 at 01:13):

How often do you take it out and play with it?

view this post on Zulip Michael Donnelly (May 14 2020 at 01:49):

Hmmm. Three thoughts, in order:

  • First thought: I think "pets" are generally animals not yeast or bacteria. (Or yeast and bacteria? I don't know much about sourdough.)
  • Second thought: If you're planning to eat something later (or eat what it produces), pretty sure that's livestock rather than a pet. :)
  • Third thought: Eh, call your own fouls. If you say it's a pet, it's a pet.

Well, the sourdough is definitely alive, has to be fed at least once a day, and occasionally fights back. But I'm going to go with 'no', on the basis that I haven't named it (yet).

I don't know why sourdough is suddenly such a big thing but @Andy Bond was telling me the other day that you used to be able to steal a copy of a baker's yeast by leaving a flour&water mix on the ground outside his bakery. I suppose you still can

view this post on Zulip Grahame Grieve (May 14 2020 at 02:32):

this is distinctly non-pet behaviour

view this post on Zulip Grahame Grieve (May 14 2020 at 02:33):

you could steal my dog with careful use of food (possibly even flour and water) but it wouldn't be a copy

view this post on Zulip Michael Donnelly (May 14 2020 at 02:33):

Also, kind of a jerk move. You wouldn't have a dog.

view this post on Zulip Grahame Grieve (May 14 2020 at 02:34):

right now, I'm not sure I wouldn't approve of the trade. Let someone else deal with the constant barking

view this post on Zulip Michael Donnelly (May 14 2020 at 02:34):

Does that mean that stealing a copy of a baker's yeast is more like stealing intellectual property than like stealing stuff?

As opposed to the constant baking?

view this post on Zulip Grahame Grieve (May 14 2020 at 02:34):

y. IP dispute

view this post on Zulip Michael Donnelly (May 14 2020 at 02:34):

(Oh frig, I can't believe I actually said that.)

view this post on Zulip Michael Donnelly (May 14 2020 at 02:35):

(I wish Zulip had second level time stamps so people could at least tell that was quick, if terrible.)

view this post on Zulip Grahame Grieve (May 14 2020 at 02:36):

I witness that it was very quick

My sourdough starter died when I went on Keto diet...

view this post on Zulip David Pyke (May 14 2020 at 13:39):

Sourdough starter doesn't work well if you give it keto friendly food

Oh, I could chat about this at length. Short version: sourdough requires daily feeding, and is a _really_ good way to structure your day and to create a daily routine/schedule. It's also a precursor ingredient to pretty much every conceivable bread product, from bread to pizza to pita to bagels and more, and lets owners focus on problems of procuring meats and veggies. It's an excellent practice for improving food security.

tl;dr - food security and creating a daily routine. $0.02

I think the reason is that people are stuck at home, and baking bread is a good idle-time task.. but then yeast emptied off the shelf because of this demand, so people have fallen back to the old school method of having active yeast...

@Thomas Emge what's your dog's name?

Good work everyone; the total is $616; $154 for each of four humane societies. Thanks to @John Moehrke, @Keith Boone, and @Christina Caraballo for matching with donations to their local shelters.
