Stream: Covid-19 Response
Topic: Managing IG content, projects, etc
Josh Mandel (Apr 03 2020 at 16:28):
On today's call we talked about where repos, issue lists, project boards, etc should live. Even though I won't have the bandwidth to join a follow-up conversation on this topic, just wanted to make my position clear here:
- We should make sure developers don't get confused.
To my mind, this means not having two different GitHub orgs where content lives and issues are managed. I don't care if work happens in the AudaciousInquiry/saner-ig
or in an HL7/saner-ig
, but I'd rather not see content pushed toHL7/saner-ig
if that's not the place where "work is being done" (e.g., Issues managed, discussion happening, example URLs pointing, etc).
John Moehrke (Apr 03 2020 at 16:54):
I have far more faith in developers to manage two GitHub repositories... than I have faith that HL7 governance will be maintained on a repository (saner-ig) that is outside and whos management (issues) are managed outside.
Michael Donnelly (Apr 03 2020 at 16:55):
If we use the HL7 GitHub repository, is there a need to keep using the current one?
John Moehrke (Apr 03 2020 at 16:57):
Keith has pointed out that the existing repository would be where open-source code could be managed, given that HL7 doesn't tend to put code in IG github repositories.
Michael Donnelly (Apr 03 2020 at 16:58):
Could the implementation guide be on the HL7 repo and any other code be on the current one?
Michael Donnelly (Apr 03 2020 at 16:58):
Or am I missing something?
John Moehrke (Apr 03 2020 at 16:58):
yes, that is what I think should happen
John Moehrke (Apr 03 2020 at 16:59):
I think Keith is worried that the kanban board would then need to be in two places. One for IG one for code... I think, yes we do need two kanban boards.
John Moehrke (Apr 03 2020 at 16:59):
I would think that we would want to freeze (tag) releases of the IG, and allow open-source code (reference implementaitions) to continue to evolve and improve...
David Pyke (Apr 03 2020 at 17:07):
So, in the short term, the IG's home will be in the HL7 space (once transferred) and the open source code and Keith's project management work will stay in the Ai space. Correct?
Grahame Grieve (Apr 03 2020 at 19:19):
HL7 doesn't tend to put code in IG github repositorie
umm? Can't think of any evidence for that
Lloyd McKenzie (Apr 03 2020 at 19:29):
A more accurate statement is "Open source code tends to live in Git repositories outside the HL7 organization (e.g. github/FHIR) because HL7 doesn't generally take responsibility for open source code initiatives"
Grahame Grieve (Apr 03 2020 at 19:47):
right. though most code HL7 has lives in github repositories. And we're working towards all code
