Has there been FHIR work done on the communication of at home Covid 19 test results? Looking at the companies that provide these tests, they seem to provide web interfaces with communication of results with the patient. Is there a use case/need for standardized communication from these companies direct to EHRs (handled appropriately) should a patient provide the needed permission? Would EHRs even be willing to manage such incoming messages/data?

Not really, no. It's designed for situational awareness of provider resources

Is this not the same use case as 'unsolicited-observations' (HL7v2 ORU_R01)? I am aware of FHIR Message equivalents being used.
