Can anyone guide me to resources that provide information to convert EDI X12 to FHIR? Any mapping sheets or open source libraries will help
Lloyd McKenzie (Jul 07 2020 at 05:20):
There is mapping work being done as part of the Da Vinci PAS implementation guide, but the maps are not open source - they are only available under license from X12 due to X12's intellectual property restrictions.

Thanks Lloyd. Looks like this project is only focusing on some of the use cases with respect to ANSI X12, mainly 278 and 275.
Lloyd McKenzie (Jul 08 2020 at 14:01):
Correct. There hasn't been any formal mapping I'm aware of for other X12 content - in part because X12 is mandated for use in regulation, so mapping to an alternate standard doesn't necessarily have a pressing use-case.
Grahame Grieve (Jul 09 2020 at 10:43):
@Paul Knapp can you say anything more about this?
Paul Knapp (Jul 14 2020 at 21:20):
@Praveen Shivaprasad I am working within VA on other mappings (277RFAI currently, 837 next) which like the Da Vinci 278, which I have also worked on, will be provided to X12 for review and publication to licensed X12 users. Ultimately I expect we will do many of the X12 transactions.

Yesterday, Financial Management resolved https://jira.hl7.org/browse/FHIR-21648 (Mapping from Claim to X12 837) with no change and the description ("X12 proprietary information cannot be included without express X12 consent.")
@Paul Knapp You'd mentioned starting an X12 837P mapping in Oct 2020 [^1], and that the work would only be available from X12.
@MaryKay McDaniel Provided temporary X12 License instructions for X12 278 mappings for Connectathon 26 in Jan 2021 [^2, ^3]. She also noted "Due to IP restrictions [the 278 to FHIR mappings are] not intended to be comprehensive."
What is the status of the X12 837 mappings?
For example, are the 837/FHIR mappings available to X12 members in Glass? If so, are the 837 mappings also "high-level" like the 278 mappings?

@Ryan Harrison Please contact X12 regarding availability of mappings from FHIR.
Jay Lyle (Jun 02 2021 at 19:47):
Does this mean it's out of bounds to ask "Is CoverageEligibilityRequest.item.productOrService where we would expect to find an X12 Service Type Code" in an open forum?
Jay Lyle (Jun 02 2021 at 20:34):
AND, We need to assign a system identifier to an NCPDP-assigned BIN. Does such an identifier exist?
Jay Lyle (Jun 07 2021 at 13:20):
And, are there value set identifiers for those X12 values? (service type, revenue code, etc.)
