Hi all,
I had a question today on where in the CCDA do you share the pronunciation of a patient's name. Is there an official opinion on this? Ways people have seen it done?(@John D'Amore

I can't recall seeing any examples in the real world around this. Good question Linda!
Linda (Jan 04 2021 at 18:36):
I have seen descriptions of how to pronounce in Nickname and I don't think that is good form
John Moehrke (Jan 04 2021 at 18:38):
excellent question. Good CDA question, but also needed broader. I expected to find this in FHIR as an extension on HumanName, but don't find it in Patient or the humanName datatype. Yet there is a query parameter for phonetic... which seems odd that a phonetic query parameter could exist (meaning it is well enough defined), but not as an element.
Linda (Jan 04 2021 at 18:49):
Yes - found this in CDA - cda_r2_normativewebedition2010/infrastructure/vocabulary/EntityNameUse.htm But not clear what it means
Vassil Peytchev (Jan 04 2021 at 18:49):
For CDA, a name with attribute use='PHON' conveys how the name is pronounced. In other words, you will have one <name> element that has the name as written, and another <name> element, where the use attribute is 'PHON' that contains the phonetic representation of the name.
Vassil Peytchev (Jan 04 2021 at 19:00):
For FHIR, there is an extension that serves the same purpose.

that is what that extension is for? Really poor named extension.

It's not just for phonetic representation - it contains the HL7 V3 use codes (via the ISO Datatypes spec)
