Topic: switching to new template // getting rid of spreadsheets
Patrick Werner (May 14 2020 at 17:47):
i wanted to continue the discussion about switching away from spreadsheets to StructureDefinitions. At the same time we could switch to the new IG template.
Patrick Werner (May 14 2020 at 17:49):
If we go with StructureDefinitions we then can:
- edit them by hand ( :no_entry: )
- Using forge
( :money: )
- using trifolia on fhir (which still isn't a really nice tool  )
Patrick Werner (May 14 2020 at 17:50):
I think using Forge would be free for creation an IG as it is "non-profit". Should check that with Firely.
Jamie Jones (May 14 2020 at 17:51):
Good use of emojis. I'd love to get forge though we may need some extra :hand: work
Patrick Werner (May 14 2020 at 17:53):
We can use the generated outputs of the current IG. But yes, setting up the new IG template with our content is quite some work.
But work i prefer over fiddling with spreadsheets for hours without knowing what i precisely do, just trial and error..
Patrick Werner (May 14 2020 at 17:54):
Forge also sometimes has bugs, but if someone with a paid plan (Molit) creates an issue it is taken care of really fast.
Kevin Power (May 14 2020 at 17:55):
For STU2, the only reasonable change we could make is to manually edit SD's isn't it?
Patrick Werner (May 14 2020 at 17:59):
i don't follow. Keep the template, but replace spreadsheets with ConformanceResources and edit them directly if needed
Patrick Werner (May 14 2020 at 18:00):
and manually includes forge, which makes thing easy.
Patrick Werner (May 14 2020 at 18:00):
but:
What is non-commercial use?
“Non-commercial” means personal or educational use. You may use Forge for free to learn FHIR or to assess Forge as long as you wish. Only when you are using Forge in real projects as part of your job, we require you to have a license for commercial use, regardless of where you are working (profit or nonprofit). In case of doubt, ask for permission.
Bret H (May 14 2020 at 18:01):
check to see if HL7 WG have some sort of blanket permission

Yes, this is what I meant. Take the SD's that have been generated from the spreadsheets today, and point our IG at those SD's instead of our spreadsheets. And going forward, manually edit the SD files.

and FSH :)
Patrick Werner (May 14 2020 at 18:50):
of course! (as soon as the roundtrip capability is there, or for initial creation of a definition)
Lloyd McKenzie (May 14 2020 at 18:58):
The main advantage of spreadsheets is the ability to look at things by columns and filter by columns. It's also slightly easier to do most stuff than by hand. However, there isn't much protection if you mess up. My experience with both Trifolia and Forge is that they cover 95-98% of what you need really well, but there's always a 2-5% that you either need or would be super-helpful that they can't do yet. I suspect FSH will end up in that same bucket, but as an open source project, it's easier/faster to get the bit you're missing in
Lloyd McKenzie (May 14 2020 at 18:59):
Biggest challenge with spreadsheets is that once you leave them there's no way to get back.
Kevin Power (May 15 2020 at 11:54):
I have had no experience with the other tools and don’t feel qualified to contribute to this decision.
