When I look at the list of branches on Github (https://github.com/HL7/fhir/branches/all), there aren't very many. However, when I look in my local Git client after doing a sync with master, it still shows lots and lots of "origin" branches. How do I make the remote branches that no longer exist disappear when I'm browsing in TortoiseGit?

https://stackoverflow.com/a/28464339 has an approach that you can use from the command line. If it works perhaps someone who knows tortoise better could recommend a way to do it there.

Is there a reason this doesn't happen automatically when you sync? What's the reason to have local copies of a bunch of dead branches?

Dad is in the eye of the beholder. In general content is never deleted from your system unless you ask for it.
