Topic: Are references required in context?

Most of the examples in the FHIRCast docs show use of Patient references inside of an ImagingStudy. In these cases, the Patient object is included in the context array. Is the reference required? I ask because I am implementing a hub and need to know if I should be looking in the context array for contextual resources (such as Patient for an ImagingStudy, or ImagingStudy for a DiagnosticReport). It seems to me that references should not be necessary.
