There are parallel and interwoven topics about the legality (yes it's legal) and ethics (debatable as always) and consumer perception of what's been going on. An inflamed point for activists on Twitter is that Google expressly undertook it in secret.
I'm not taking a stand in this message - just please go read through when you can. There will surely be lots more discussions like this in our (broadly defined) future.
