We are maintaining a catalog of reference ranges for every laboratory code as a collection of ObservationDefinitions on FHIR server. What would be the correct way to express that the range applies under pregnancy? In particular, there should be separate reference ranges for every period of pregnancy as recognized by our laboratory, say 1-9 weeks, 10-19... etc.

The alternatives are:

  • qualifiedInterval.appliesTo is bound to an Example valueset, which even lists a code 'Pregnancy confirmed'
  • qualifiedInterval.context appears more fitting for the purpose, and the valueset is Extensible, but its values are rather different in nature from what we might want to put there

Is pregnancy more of a context or a population?
