Topic: Zulip upgrade
Josh Mandel (Aug 05 2016 at 21:22):
I'm getting ready to apply a zulip server upgrade. Please speak up if this is a bad time!
Andy Stechishin (Aug 05 2016 at 21:26):
@Josh Mandel it would not impact me but the content deadline for the ballot is Monday, what happens if it blows up? Would it be possible to wait until Monday or is it necessary to roll out today?
Josh Mandel (Aug 05 2016 at 21:26):
Waiting 'til Monday sounds like a fine plan!
Lloyd McKenzie (Aug 06 2016 at 02:21):
Content deadline is actually the 10th - Wednesday. So Thursday would be even better :)
Andy Stechishin (Aug 06 2016 at 04:16):
Andy Stechishin (Aug 06 2016 at 04:17):
sorry Lloyd, final content deadline is Sunday night (or Monday morning)
Grahame Grieve (Aug 06 2016 at 07:25):
That's not the FHIR schedule
Josh Mandel (Aug 11 2016 at 16:32):
I'm still planning to update the server to zulip 1.3.13 (from 1.3.10). In theory it should be a quick process. (Or the server will go down in flames.) Objections to my running this now?
Josh Mandel (Aug 11 2016 at 16:36):
I'll share status updates at https://gist.github.com/jmandel/9911daea823f9227f4c8f671cd08935c in case things take longer than 5min.
Josh Mandel (Aug 11 2016 at 16:46):
Back?
Josh Mandel (Aug 12 2016 at 02:38):
Sorry the server has been flaky -- still debugging. On the plus side, we now have :fhir:
Josh Mandel (Aug 12 2016 at 02:57):

Hussain Chinoy (Aug 17 2016 at 21:28):
The chat server will be undergoing an infrastructure upgrade this evening. Please expect some downtime.
Grahame Grieve (Aug 17 2016 at 21:30):
Thanks Hussain
Hussain Chinoy (Aug 17 2016 at 21:51):
Anytime, Grahame :)
The chat server is now back up and running (the server has been provisioned to a better performing VM).
Grahame Grieve (Aug 17 2016 at 21:54):
yay thanks
Vadim Peretokin (Aug 25 2016 at 23:05):
zulip is double-sending the 'while you've been gone' emails to me
David McKillop (Aug 25 2016 at 23:37):
I'm getting the same thing, but I thought it might be realted to us having 2 e-mail addresses on Zulip ie @nehta.gov.au and now @digitalhealth.gov.au . I wasn't able to find a place on Zulip to turn-off the @nehta.gov.au email address off.
However, the double-sending "while you were out" seems to have started on the 7th Aug 2016, so it might be related to the Zulip upgrade or Zulip change?
Michael O'Keefe (Sep 08 2016 at 17:47):
I'm getting the same double-emails
Josh Mandel (Nov 22 2016 at 02:49):
I'm going to upgrade our server's zulip version — should be back up in a few moments (famous last words).
Josh Mandel (Nov 22 2016 at 02:50):
Update log at: https://gist.github.com/jmandel/279e759fea8c9d1864cecd55f8799e08
Josh Mandel (Nov 22 2016 at 02:54):
Back!
Josh Mandel (Nov 22 2016 at 02:58):
Among other updates:
1) Our server is now compatible with the Zulip mobile clients (use https://chat.fhir.org
as your server when signing up)
2) There's a streams search feature (magnifying glass to the right of "streams" in the left-side bar)
3) You can only edit your messages for a fixed length of time (not forever). This is configurable, but I think it should help keep us sane.
Jens Villadsen (Nov 29 2016 at 09:03):
great stuff!
nicola (RIO/SS) (Dec 01 2016 at 18:37):
Awesome, mobile just works!

Josh Mandel (Jul 07 2017 at 01:04):
I'm going to upgrade the Zulip server to the latest release (v1.6).
Josh Mandel (Jul 07 2017 at 01:04):
Upgrade log at https://gist.github.com/jmandel/56f6192170f74af46a2910bc06d251d1 in case any issues arise...
Josh Mandel (Jul 07 2017 at 01:08):
OK, we're back!
Josh Mandel (Jul 07 2017 at 01:18):
(Commit hooks won't auto-link to svn revisions yet; I need to update that piece, but the lack of it shouldn't get in anyone's way. If that's not true, let me know!)
Josh Mandel (Jul 07 2017 at 01:19):
For release notes, see http://blog.zulip.org/2017/06/06/zulip-server-1-6-released/
Josh Mandel (Jul 07 2017 at 02:13):
Features I'd like to highlight include:
- You can now update your e-mail address and other account settings from https://chat.fhir.org/#settings/your-account
- Extensive new keyboard shortcuts including
+
to respond withand
n
to cycle through unread streams/topics - Support for push messages on android (should be working by Monday) and, later on, iOS
- Performance enhancements that should make our user sidebar snappier by limiting to users with recent activity
Josh Mandel (Jul 07 2017 at 02:14):
A big shout-out to @Tim Abbott and the Zulip team for this jam-packed release!
Josh Mandel (Jul 07 2017 at 21:23):
Push notifications on Android are now working! If you are using the Android client you will need to sign out and sign back in again before this works.
Rein Zustand (Aug 14 2017 at 06:29):
o/ Heads up I'm about to experiment running a bi-directional tunnel bot to chat.zulip.org in a '<- chat.zulip.org' topic in '#social' stream. Let me know ASAP when it becomes too spammy (tho feel free to say/ask anything to chat.zulip.org!), then i'll shut the bot.
Josh Mandel (Nov 09 2017 at 18:09):
FYI in about 5 hours we'll be updating Zulip to the latest release (1.7, published 2 weeks ago -- details at https://github.com/zulip/zulip/releases/tag/1.7.0). We'll expect a bit of downtime here, which I'll announce when the time comes.
Michel Rutten (Nov 09 2017 at 22:43):
Added OpsGenie, Google Code-In, Google Search, and xkcd integrations.
Josh Mandel (Nov 09 2017 at 22:45):
Yeah, that should definitely come in handy!
Grahame Grieve (Nov 09 2017 at 22:55):
@xkcd 927
Grahame Grieve (Nov 09 2017 at 22:55):
.. guess we need to turn that on somewhere
Jenni Syed (Nov 09 2017 at 22:56):
I have a feeling that will be a popular one
Elliot Silver (Nov 09 2017 at 22:56):
Apparently, Grahame is preapplying the update.
Grahame Grieve (Nov 09 2017 at 22:56):
duh
Josh Mandel (Nov 09 2017 at 23:13):
OK, I'm going to start the upgrade now.
Josh Mandel (Nov 09 2017 at 23:13):
Will keep a log at https://gist.github.com/jmandel/5b7a0ef3fe1be41da53fff0d9fcf8fbd

@xkcd 927
Josh Mandel (Nov 09 2017 at 23:42):
Done! Note that nobody is hosting the xkcd bot for us, so this won't work yet :-)
Grahame Grieve (Nov 09 2017 at 23:46):
hah ok well it was worth a try
Grahame Grieve (Nov 09 2017 at 23:46):
thnks for doing the upgrade
Josh Mandel (Nov 09 2017 at 23:58):
sure! And we'll get XKCD working, never fear :p

#927: Standards
Fortunately, the charging one has been solved now that we've all standardized on mini-USB. Or is it micro-USB? Shit.
Grahame Grieve (Nov 10 2017 at 00:59):
yay thanks
Lloyd McKenzie (Nov 10 2017 at 03:32):
Quick reminder that discussion of announcements should be on Social :)

xkcd bot only supports these commands, not 'password':
@xkcd help
to show this help message.@xkcd latest
to fetch the latest comic strip from xkcd.@xkcd random
to fetch a random comic strip from xkcd.@xkcd <comic id>
to fetch a comic strip based on<comic id>

Upgrading zulip to the latest 1.8 release (http://blog.zulip.org/2018/04/18/zulip-1-8-released/) -- should be back shortly.
Josh Mandel (Dec 27 2018 at 15:29):
I'm going to be upgrading chat.fhir.org to the latest Zulip release; should be back online shortly. (Note this is a preliminary step before moving to a new server hosted by the delightful team at zulip.org)

Josh Mandel (Dec 27 2018 at 15:51):
And we're back. Note there will be some more downtime in the next couple of days as we migrate the server; will announce here.
Josh Mandel (Dec 27 2018 at 18:25):
Thanks for bearing with us through the last couple of hours of downtime; we're still not quite ready to do a server migration, so there will be a bit more downtime coming (likely tomorrow) once we get our data in shape for the transition.
Josh Mandel (Dec 29 2018 at 18:17):
Okay, today we're going to make the transfer over to a new server. I'm going to be taking the site down now to begin this process; will send an email to the FHIR mailing list (see http://wiki.hl7.org/index.php?title=FHIR_email_list_subscription_instructions) with updates.
Jenni Syed (Jan 07 2019 at 18:55):
Out of curiosity, is it expected that links to topics change over time? I can't tell if this happened post-upgrade or at some other point, but a few of our external links into zulip were broken (I haven't done the diff to see if all were broken). I came in and found threads manually, so they're still there...
Michel Rutten (Jan 08 2019 at 10:04):
Looks like the Zulip server upgrade has broken links to streams...?
Lloyd McKenzie (Jan 08 2019 at 15:57):
Discussion on #social please
