After reading mXDE - sounds like a FHIR Facade for a set of document repositories, and mXDE also allows non-document sources of data. Would that be a fair high level summary?

yes. mXDE is specifically a profile of profiles that postulates that where a document sharing environment exists, there could be a service that decomposes the documents and makes the content available as FHIR Resources, with Provenance linkage back to the document(s) from which that fact came from.
