Subject: RxNorm Not Valid in UMLS
My FSH files include RxNorm#2395779
This code is valid on RxNav: https://mor.nlm.nih.gov/RxNav/search?searchBy=RXCUI&searchTerm=2395779
When I generate, Error!
The code "2395779" is not valid in the system http://www.nlm.nih.gov/research/umls/rxnorm; The code provided (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/research/umls/rxnorm#2395779) is not valid in the value set 'All codes known to the system' (from http://tx.fhir.org/r4) for 'http://www.nlm.nih.gov/research/umls/rxnorm#2395779'
Does anyone know how to resolve this error? Reach out to UMLS?
Has anyone corrected a similar issue?
Thank you!

Code is valid in the 2021AA UMLS https://uts.nlm.nih.gov/uts/umls/vocabulary/RXNORM/2395779
Rob Hausam (Aug 10 2021 at 22:28):
RxNorm is currently from 08/2020 so it needs to be updated. Of course it's a challenge to keep up with it (which we never will completely), as it has monthly (or even weekly) releases.
Sheila Connelly (Aug 12 2021 at 15:50):
Thank you. I'll let my team know.
Rob Hausam (Aug 12 2021 at 15:56):
@Sheila Connelly I would like to get that update done within 24-48 hours, if I can. There is one aspect that may need to be computed (rather than directly available) - and if so, that could take a little longer. I'll investigate that further.
Sheila Connelly (Aug 12 2021 at 16:51):
Wow. @Rob Hausam thank you so much. - There is one other RXNORM with the same trouble; same medication:
The code "2395785" is not valid in the system http://www.nlm.nih.gov/research/umls/rxnorm; The code provided (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/research/umls/rxnorm#2395785) is not valid in the value set 'All codes known to the system' (from http://tx.fhir.org/r4) for 'http://www.nlm.nih.gov/research/umls/rxnorm#2395785'
Sheila Connelly (Aug 12 2021 at 16:53):
@Rob Hausam - did you already update RXNorm#2395779 ? Suddenly that error is gone, and only RXNORM#2395785 remains.
Sheila Connelly (Aug 16 2021 at 14:42):
@Rob Hausam - I thought one had disappeared, but no.
There still are four RXNORM codes with the same error:
RXNORM#2395777 // SCD/GPCK - 0.5 ML dulaglutide 6 MG/ML Auto-Injector
RXNORM#2395783 // SCD/GPCK - 0.5 ML dulaglutide 9 MG/ML Auto-Injector
RXNORM#2395779 // SBD/BPCK - 0.5 ML Trulicity 6 MG/ML Auto-Injector
RXNORM#2395785 // SBD/BPCK - 0.5 ML Trulicity 9 MG/ML Auto-Injector
Rob Hausam (Aug 16 2021 at 14:44):
@Sheila Connelly That makes sense. There is still one bit of the RxNorm update that isn't obvious, and now that Grahame is back from his travels I will need to check with him on it. I'll try to do that today.
Grahame Grieve (Aug 17 2021 at 04:35):
what's the issue?
Sheila Connelly (Aug 17 2021 at 10:32):
Hello @Grahame Grieve - Thank you for taking a look at this.
I have four RxNorm codes not valid, yet they should be: 2395777, 2395783, 2395779, 2395785
The full Error message for each (using the first as an example) reads:
The code "2395777" is not valid in the system http://www.nlm.nih.gov/research/umls/rxnorm; The code provided (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/research/umls/rxnorm#2395777) is not valid in the value set 'All codes known to the system' (from http://tx.fhir.org/r4) for 'http://www.nlm.nih.gov/research/umls/rxnorm#2395777'
Grahame Grieve (Aug 20 2021 at 06:32):
this should be resolved shortly. @Rob Hausam did you import a new RxNorm? Because these codes work for me after doing so
Rob Hausam (Aug 20 2021 at 12:38):
Updating RxNorm is still in the queue for me to do. Now that Grahame and I clarified the question about separately updating the stems, I can go ahead and do the update and I should be able to do that today. @Sheila Connelly @Grahame Grieve
Grahame Grieve (Aug 20 2021 at 18:45):
actually... I was wrong. You should wait for the next release - due very soon, and then do the import in the tool
Rob Hausam (Aug 21 2021 at 12:05):
I built the latest version of fhirconsole and I've gone ahead and imported the 08022021 version of RxNorm using the tool (it took 6 hours for it to complete, but it's there). The four codes that you mentioned are now recognized on tx.fhir.org, @Sheila Connelly.
Sheila Connelly (Aug 21 2021 at 20:29):
Really great news. Thank you so much. Very much appreciate @Rob Hausam and @Grahame Grieve !! You guys are the best!!
