Topic: Open terminology server?
Paul Lynch (Jun 21 2019 at 21:45):
Is there a public FHIR server that supports $expand on some ValueSets? I am trying to find something to experiment with, and don't really care which ValueSets are included. I've checked http://wiki.hl7.org/index.php?title=Publicly_Available_FHIR_Servers_for_testing, but could not get $expand to work on any listed as supporting terminology.
Rob Hausam (Jun 21 2019 at 22:13):
The public HAPI server (which is listed) does it, and any of the terminology servers should be able to do it (it's arguably the most fundamental terminology service operation). They aren't actually listed, but the tx.fhir.org terminology servers used by the FHIR build (i.e. tx.fhir.org/r4) definitely do $expand (test.fhir.org is listed, but not tx.fhir.org for some reason). If it still doesn't work for you let us know.

So, I found http://hapi.fhir.org/baseR4/ValueSet/medication-status/$expand, which works, though for some reason http://hapi.fhir.org/baseR4/ValueSet/$expand?url=http://hl7.org/fhir/medication-status does not. Did I miss something about the syntax for that form?
Paul Lynch (Jun 21 2019 at 22:14):
Also, shouldn't hapi.fhir.org be on http://wiki.hl7.org/index.php?title=Publicly_Available_FHIR_Servers_for_testing?
Rob Hausam (Jun 21 2019 at 22:15):
The page does need some updates.
Paul Lynch (Jun 21 2019 at 22:22):
http://tx.fhir.org/r4/ValueSet/$expand?url=http://hl7.org/fhir/ValueSet/medication-status works.
Michael Lawley (Jun 22 2019 at 00:58):
Have a play with https://ontoserver.csiro.au/vstool - it sends of the same $expand requests to multiple open servers so you can get a feel for how they respond.
Paul Lynch (Jun 25 2019 at 16:36):
@Michael Lawley Thanks. How does one use the "custom" field? I tried putting "http://hl7.org/fhir/ValueSet/medication-status" into it, and hitting enter, but it did not respond.
Michael Lawley (Jun 26 2019 at 14:21):
The custom field is for supplying your a terminology server other than one of the pre-configured ones.
Michael Lawley (Jun 26 2019 at 14:22):
Currently there's no mechanism for specifying a ValueSet that's not one of the preconfigured ones.
