Topic: Incorrect RxNorm display errors on IG build?
Corey Spears (Aug 14 2021 at 06:55):
The Da Vinci Formulary IG is getting build warnings on the examples that have RxNorm codes and a display. The RxNorm display seems to be accurate as they are the SCD or CBD from rxnconso and are in the format defined by RxNorm (Ingredient + Strength + Dose Form [Brand Name]).
The warnings show up on this QA report
The suggested values definitely look wrong as they do not follow the RxNorm Name formats.

Examples:
-
RXCUI 1049640, has a suggested value of "one of [Percocet 5 MG / 325 MG Oral Tablet, Percocet 5/325 Oral Tablet, Percocet 5/325 (oxycodone hydrochloride / APAP) Oral Tablet, APAP 325 MG / Oxycodone Hydrochloride 5 MG Oral Tablet [Percocet]]"
The IG has what seems to be the correct display of "acetaminophen 325 MG / oxycodone hydrochloride 5 MG Oral Tablet [Percocet]" -
RXCUI 209459, has a suggested value of "one of [Tylenol Extra Strength 500 MG Oral Tablet, Tylenol 500 MG Oral Tablet, Tylenol Extra Strength 500 MG Oral Tablet, APAP 500 MG Oral Tablet [Tylenol]]"
The IG has what seems to be the correct display of "acetaminophen 500 MG Oral Tablet [Tylenol]" -
RXCUI 1000091, has a suggested value of "one of [doxepin HCl 5 % Topical Cream, doxepin hydrochloride 5 % Topical Cream]"
The IG has what seems to be the correct display of "doxepin hydrochloride 50 MG/ML Topical Cream"

Those suggested values are synonyms from RxNorm.

They may be the suggested synonyms, but they are not the preferred name from what I can tell. Per FHIR the correct RxNorm code is the SBD or SCD (https://www.hl7.org/fhir/rxnorm.html). That spec misses a few other relevant term types such as packs (a Jira has been added for that).
US Core Medications brings all the other relevant term types (http://hl7.org/fhir/us/core/STU3.1.1/ValueSet-us-core-medication-codes.html).
The IG Publisher + Term Server should not be throwing a warning when using the preferred name while also suggesting to use synonyms, which should generally not be used.
