Topic: COVID-19 - ICD-11 Vaccine Codes -
Peter Jordan (Mar 20 2021 at 21:13):
From the latest version of the WHO's Interim Guidance for Smart Vaccination Certificates...
• The normative base code system for the SVC is ICD-11. For COVID-19, a 1-to-1 mapping is included in the specification between ICD-11 and SNOMED GPS.
• includes a one-to-one map between relevant ICD-11 codes and the functionally equivalent code in the SNOMED Global Patient Set (GPS).
Has anyone seen the relevant ICD-11 Codes?

The urls above link to COVID-19 related content. But therelevant ICD-11 codes are not found.
Lin Zhang (Mar 21 2021 at 00:00):

No record for 2020 and later
https://confluence.ihtsdotools.org/display/CDR/ICD-11+Map
Peter Jordan (Mar 21 2021 at 08:26):
Thanks for those links @Lin Zhang - however, I'm looking specifically for the ICD-11 codes for the COVID-19 Vaccines as that's the WHO's 'normative base code system' for Smart Vaccination Certificates.
Lin Zhang (Mar 21 2021 at 14:04):
There are no codes for SARS-CoV-2 vaccines under ICD-11 XM61M7 Viral vaccines for now (ICD-11 MMS Version : 09/2020).
Lin Zhang (Mar 21 2021 at 14:04):
See https://icd.who.int/browse11/l-m/en#/http%3a%2f%2fid.who.int%2ficd%2fentity%2f1347156717
Lin Zhang (Mar 21 2021 at 14:13):
Also See https://www.who.int/publications/m/item/core-data-set-for-the-smart-vaccination-certificate
Lin Zhang (Mar 21 2021 at 14:17):
In the core dataset above, you can find the ICD-11 Extension Codes for the vaccine types or subtypes, and not limited to SARS-CoV-2 or even viruses.
Lin Zhang (Mar 21 2021 at 14:19):
And the spreadsheet is an attachment of the following guidance:

Peter Jordan (Mar 21 2021 at 21:25):
Many thanks @Lin Zhang - so the ICD-11 COVID-19 Vaccines are 'Extension Codes'. Do you know if this can be used now, or are they subject to an approval process?
Michael Lawley (Mar 21 2021 at 22:49):
Is one supposed to record the Foundation code or the MMS code?
Lin Zhang (Mar 21 2021 at 23:43):
An example
ICD-11 Extension code for COVID-19 vaccine, inactivated virus: http://id.who.int/icd/entity/164949870
It looks like the former.
Lin Zhang (Mar 21 2021 at 23:47):
@Peter Jordan
I think they would need to be formally published because the guidance is still in Call for Comments phase.
Any questions, please contact: smartvaccination@who.int

That doesn't look right to me as an individual vaccine code - as http://id.who.int/icd/entity/164949870 covers all the Vaccine Codes. In FHIR terms, I'd expect to see something like this in a ValueSet expansion.
<contains>
<system value="http://id.who.int/icd11/foundation" />
<code value="XM0GQ8" />
<display value="COVID-19 vaccine, RNA based" />
</contains>
It would be interesting to see what others think, as I am very new to ICD-11.
Lin Zhang (Mar 22 2021 at 06:35):
@Grahame Grieve This question is also related to the url of ICD-11 (Foundation).

David Pyke (Mar 22 2021 at 13:47):
The WHO is mandating manufacturer as part of their Smart Vaccine Certificate spec. So, this code would be used in combination with the manufacturer or market auth. So, unlike LOINC which lists every individual, ICD-11 just cares about type.

AFAIA, LOINC doesn't currently have any COVID-19 Vaccine Codes (and I have the latest version, 2.69, on my Server and all the pre-release, special use terms).
Josh Mandel (Mar 22 2021 at 19:05):
As a point of reference: in VCI, our value set so far includes CVX codes, which bring these details (vaccine type, manufacturer) together in product-specific ways. http://build.fhir.org/ig/dvci/vaccine-credential-ig/branches/main/index.html has details.
Josh Mandel (Mar 22 2021 at 19:07):
https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/programs/iis/COVID-19-related-codes.html gives a sense of the information that a CVX code conveys (vs packaging details like carton size, which are separate).
Peter Jordan (Mar 22 2021 at 19:18):
Thanks, @Josh Mandel. We are using the CVX Codes at the data entry point in NZ. It's likely that we will then map them to the SNOMED CT codes for HIE purposes. A growing collection of COVID-19 Vaccine Codes can be obtained here... https://terminz.azurewebsites.net/fhir/ValueSet/covid-19-vaccines/$expand I haven't added the ICD-11 ones yet as I'm not sure if they're official (and who has actually implemented ICD-11?).
Michael Lawley (Mar 22 2021 at 21:24):
XM0GQ8 is an MMS code, not a foundation code?
Rob Hausam (Mar 22 2021 at 21:48):
We need to get some clarity on this - particularly from WHO.
Peter Jordan (Mar 23 2021 at 00:36):
The ICD-11 Reference Guide states that "The Foundation Component is a multidimensional collection of all ICD entities. Entities can be diseases, disorders, injuries, external causes, signs and symptoms."

IMPORTANT Note: The content made availabe here is not a released version of the ICD-11. It is a work in progress in between released versions
Carl Leitner (Mar 23 2021 at 21:18):
ICD-11 codes for Covid-11 for SVC-RC1 are here https://who-int.github.io/svc/artifacts.html#2 these are draft and will be added to.
Carl Leitner (Mar 23 2021 at 21:20):
It is part of the larger core data set and business requirements: https://www.who.int/news-room/articles-detail/call-for-public-comments-interim-guidance-for-developing-a-smart-vaccination-certificate-release-candidate-1
Peter Jordan (Mar 23 2021 at 21:46):
@Carl Leitner - The links in that IG point to the 09/2020 version of ICD-11 MMS which, for obvious reasons, doesn't actually contain any COVID-19 Vaccine Codes. Hopefully, in time , the extension concepts listed by @Lin Zhang above will be accessible from the IG.
Peter Jordan (Apr 27 2021 at 01:54):
@Lin Zhang I notice, from the SVC thread that there are now MMS Codes for these 9 ICD-11 COVID-19 concepts. Do you know whether implementers should be using the MMS or the Foundation Codes?
Lin Zhang (Apr 28 2021 at 00:24):
The final version of the SVC IG might still being in process, I guess, because the deadline to provide constructive feedback on this document by 12 April 2021 as the following page shows:
Lin Zhang (Apr 28 2021 at 00:25):
I'll check the status of the codes in the ICD-11 Foundation.
Lin Zhang (Apr 28 2021 at 01:07):
In the MMS, no codes for COVID-19 Vaccines officially published yet:
https://icd.who.int/browse11/l-m/en
Lin Zhang (Apr 28 2021 at 01:09):
See XM61M7 Viral vaccines for details:
https://icd.who.int/browse11/l-m/en#/http://id.who.int/icd/entity/1347156717
Lin Zhang (Apr 28 2021 at 01:15):
@Peter Jordan So the referenced ICD-11 MMS url (https://icd.who.int/browse11) is misleading in the definition of the ValueSet: WHO Vaccine List(https://who-int.github.io/svc/refs/heads/rc2/ValueSet-who-svc-vaccines.html).

MMS or Foundation?
Grahame Grieve (May 06 2021 at 13:36):
MMS in general.
Grahame Grieve (May 06 2021 at 13:36):
but you should know why you are using ICD-11, and that should actually drive your answer
