A proposal for the 2016-09 FHIR Connectathon "device integration" track has been created; very strong interest ... very initial draft! Feedback requested (http://wiki.hl7.org/index.php?title=201609_Device_Integration#Device_Data_Integration)
Ioana Singureanu (Jun 21 2016 at 00:18):
I reviewed the the proposal and it seems limited to transactions from devices to information systems. Is there any interest in adding a "associated patient-to-device-to-operator" request via Encounter? One of the problems we could not solve very easily with V2 was the patient-to-devices and device-to-operator association at the point of care.
Todd Cooper (Jun 21 2016 at 01:09):
You read it ... THANK YOU!!!
Todd Cooper (Jun 21 2016 at 01:11):
One of the possible objectives I put in the list today was to address patient-device association; definitely could add operator too. We have to address this at some point - and in a FHIR word that point is at the get-go IMHO. So we can put it on the list for September, but if not then, then January for sure.
Todd Cooper (Jun 21 2016 at 01:12):
Feel free to update the spec accordingly - or I can do it if you would rather.
Ioana Singureanu (Jun 21 2016 at 18:09):
Great, I will add the Patient-to-Device and Operator-to-Device association using the "Encounter" resource. These associations could be used for infusion pumps to support 8-rights (initially the 5-rights). It would be interesting if we could recruit interested implementers who are looking for opportunities to go beyond the current IHE PCD DEC profile.

@Todd Cooper I updated the http://wiki.hl7.org/index.php?title=201609_Device_Integration#Device_Data_Integration page and added an example scenario. My primary objective would be to add an Encounter "create" to associate a patient-to-device-to-operator/performer.
Todd Cooper (Jun 22 2016 at 17:15):
Boy ... you did! [graphic renders pretty huge]. I'll give it a look. I too updated at about exactly the same time - what are the odds given all the hours in a day - the section below with the links & info for the device component at the HIMSS 2016 Interop Showcase.
Ioana Singureanu (Jun 22 2016 at 17:44):
Sorry, there is probably way to resize it but I didn't want to fiddle with that.
I will add the FHR Encounter "interaction" to including the UDI scanning.
Todd Cooper (Jun 23 2016 at 02:13):
@Ioana Singureanu No worries ... I moved the Encounter content down with the other tech aspects and then created a 5th potential scenario for "5+3 Rights of Medication Administration", included a resized graphic & link to the nursing ed. page you indicated. NOTE: I think the 5+3 Rights might work better ... give it a thought.

Hi Todd:
I added some clarification regarding Scenario 4: http://wiki.hl7.org/index.php?title=201609_Device_Integration#Scenario_4:_Patient-Device-Operator_Association._Management_using_EHR_Encounter_and_FDA_UDI
Basically we can support the patient-to-device-to-operator association using the UDI of the devices, the patient id band, and the operator's employee badge - all scanned at the point of care. Since FHIR Encounter does not support a participating but we could create profile to support a device extension to support "device-involved encounters"
Ioana Singureanu (Jul 07 2016 at 15:05):
I reached out to Continua members to see if the personal device may benefit from adoption FHIR resource to establish remote monitoring sessions.
Todd Cooper (Jul 07 2016 at 19:43):
FWIW - We actually have been pretty plugged into the PCHA/Continua work for this connectathon, with @Brian Reinhold participating from LNI; also there is a Continua / Devices track at the November FHIR Dev Days in Amsterdam, etc. We are working to get a consistent semantic representation whether you end up with 11073/PHD or acute, IHE PCD (w/ HL7 V2), HL7 FHIR, OpenICE or OpenSDC. Are also tracking the work with the CIMI WG esp. that Grahame has been doing to advance FHIR profiles from CIMI ADL models.
