Topic: connectathon pricing
Josh Mandel (Apr 21 2016 at 16:53):
Did we know that participating in the connectathon now costs $US 395? This has crept up since the last time I paid attention ―$400 is really a lot for a 1.5-day hack session.
Paul Knapp (Apr 27 2016 at 17:43):
That's for observers, it is $295 for participants.
Josh Mandel (Apr 27 2016 at 17:59):
I don't think so -- the pricing for non-HL7-members is higher than members, so you may be misled if you're signed in to the HL7 site, @Paul Knapp. I stumbled on the same thing.
Paul Knapp (Apr 27 2016 at 18:18):
Sorry I thought we were talking member prices, based on nothing at all. The price is high but not astronomical - the Nov FHIR 'now referring to itself as a hackathon' is 6 times that albiet with speakers too and 3 days.
Josh Mandel (Apr 27 2016 at 18:20):
For some context, I just searched google for "hackathon price to participate":
see, e.g. https://www.quora.com/Should-developers-pay-to-join-a-hackathon
Josh Mandel (Apr 27 2016 at 18:23):
My take is that $400 is too high for the community we'd want to attract. For businesses, it's no big deal. But for individuals, it is.
Grahame Grieve (Apr 27 2016 at 18:24):
I haven't heard anyone specifically say 'it's too expensive for me' - except that I've heard that generally about the fact that you have to travel
Josh Mandel (Apr 27 2016 at 18:25):
I've only heard comments from people who are pretty much our captive audience -- but if it strikes even *them*, I'd have to bet others just don't even bother.
Josh Mandel (Apr 27 2016 at 18:25):
But mostly I'm just trying to compare our pricing with other comparable industry events. I guess we have a lot less sponsorship?
Grahame Grieve (Apr 27 2016 at 18:26):
less, yes, though more obvious this time. Scale matters
Grahame Grieve (Apr 27 2016 at 18:26):
is IHE comparable?
Josh Mandel (Apr 27 2016 at 18:26):
No idea -- I didn't know they held hackathon-like events.
Josh Mandel (Apr 27 2016 at 18:27):
I know they have their own "connectathon", but with very different scope/goals.
Grahame Grieve (Apr 27 2016 at 18:27):
no they don't. They hold certification-athons.
Grahame Grieve (Apr 27 2016 at 18:27):
cost is radically different
Josh Mandel (Apr 27 2016 at 18:27):
Exactly. There it's all commercial players.
