look for the v2 access database on the HL7 website

Has anyone processed those into FHIR Logical models?

view this post on Zulip Grahame Grieve (Nov 29 2018 at 01:56):

yes i have. Will be making this available once R4 is published

Is there a free version of this v2 Access DB ?

view this post on Zulip John Silva (Feb 18 2019 at 22:52):

The InM committee used to have a DB for use in generating Conformance (XML) stuff I believe; not sure if it was freely available or not. Trying to remember the person who was the InM committee chair for a number of years --- he would know.

view this post on Zulip Grahame Grieve (Feb 19 2019 at 22:43):

I don't believe it was freely available for many years, except for internal use for committee business

view this post on Zulip John Silva (Feb 19 2019 at 22:43):

Yep, Frank is the guy I remember who had the HL7 V2 DB for conformance profiling and XML V2 generation

Since the opening of the availability of standards materials, should that now be a different answer @Grahame Grieve ?

view this post on Zulip Grahame Grieve (Feb 20 2019 at 02:02):

I don't think that one is different. Nor am I sure whether it should be

the comprehensive v2 Access database contains all information about all v2.x versions (2.1 - 2.8.2). It allows for generating xml schemas, websites (hl7.eu/refactored/hl7.html), FHIR structure definitions, etc. I haven't added generation of example messages yet.

Thank you all. @Frank Oemig - like FHIR examples, any possibility of getting v2 Access db for free download. I am a HL7 member, and not sure if HL7 supports that. I am also interested in such examples for v3, CDA and CCDA.

view this post on Zulip René Spronk (Feb 22 2019 at 07:54):

Largely for historic and contractual reasons the v2 access database isn't a free for use product, not for members or anyone else. I did request the HL7 BoD to free it up a couple of years ago, but to no avail, v2 was/is still dealt with differently than FHIR when it comes to this. Computable specifications of the other standards are readily available, although not always in an easy to use format.
If it's just about the bare bones v2 definitions you could have a look at some of the open source HL7 v2 tools out there, they also contain the v2 message definitions - however, you may be infringing on their work, and it won't be the official source of truth.

Is it possible to use the v2.xml from the HL7.org website for this purpose @Nilesh Pagare ? @René Spronk - does v2.xml have the same 'licensing restrictions' as the V2 Access DB or can it be freely used?

Here is a link with more up to date schemas @John Silva . http://www.hl7.org/implement/standards/product_brief.cfm?product_id=213. If you download the "Version 2.5 and earlier" version there is a reference to Sun having built them off of the Access database, so you may still need to feel out the licensing restrictions. I believe that the versions after 2.5 are subject to the default HL7 IP policy.

view this post on Zulip Grahame Grieve (Feb 22 2019 at 20:21):

HL7 standards and related artefacts are licensed to individuals for free use, but there is no license approval for those individuals to share any derived artefacts with each other. Most of the open source libraries are in violation of this license, and I don't know how that tension will be resolved.

This doesn't apply to FHIR artefacts, which have always and only been licensed under Creative Commons Domain (the derived software is mostly licensed under BSD or Apache)

view this post on Zulip René Spronk (Feb 23 2019 at 09:33):

How to resolve this? Use a new open licensing scheme for all HL7 standards. Simple, right ? ;-)

view this post on Zulip Grahame Grieve (Feb 23 2019 at 12:28):

yes. simple. But the opposite of easy

view this post on Zulip John Silva (Feb 23 2019 at 16:50):

Sounds like something that needs to be raised to the HL7 board. In these days of open source software and standards, these kind of impediments hold back interoperability. It's great that FHIR has, from the start, has a more "open" licensing model but the reality (the 'real world') still has many (mostly?) HL7 V2 interfaces and if we want to bring them into the FHIR world, we need to remove this licensing hurdle (IMHO).

view this post on Zulip Grahame Grieve (Feb 23 2019 at 21:46):

sure but be aware that there are a number of people at HL7 who are strongly opposed to open source, and so a change like this will have strong push-back

view this post on Zulip René Spronk (Feb 24 2019 at 09:13):

It sure ain't gonna happen if we don't try, try, and try again... ;-)

@René Spronk , @Grahame Grieve , @Nick Hatt and @John Silva - so as of now the v2 xml and v2 access store is still not free to use. Is that correct ?

view this post on Zulip René Spronk (Feb 25 2019 at 08:42):

@Nilesh Pagare Correct.

view this post on Zulip Grahame Grieve (Feb 25 2019 at 08:59):

I believe that's not quite correct: v2.xml is free to use, but not to share derived artefacts. v2 access database is not free in either sense

view this post on Zulip Nick Hatt (Feb 25 2019 at 14:03):

@Nilesh Pagare it also depends on what you actually want to do with your product. http://www.hl7.org/legal/ippolicy.cfm the HL7 IP Policy lets you do more if you join as an organizational member.
