https://www.hl7.org/fhir/datatypes.html#Identifier mentions that Identifer is:

A numeric or alphanumeric string that is associated with a single object or entity within a given system

From that description it sounds like that anything that isn't numeric or alphanumeric is allowed. That is hower not the case as the use of eg. '-' and ':' are allowed in both system and value - so shouldn't that description either be updated or should the conformance rules be made stricter? @Grahame Grieve

it could certainly be clearer. It doesn't just have to alpha-numerics, though that's usually what it is
