Is it possible to add a custom search parameter (in the profile, in the server) when the core resource does not support it?
e.g. in R4, if I want to search devices by device.partnumber

So I guess we have to define the searchparam in the profile, and then get the server to accommodate for it, in whichever magical way the server does it, right?

Depends on the server, yes. Some may have a way of adding at runtime, others may require code changes, etc. It is likely there will need to be a new index on the database as well.
