An interesting post from the Go community: https://research.swtch.com/vgo-import which supports the notion of having a major version in your canonical. Although you could say it's just a trick to let runtimes load multiple versions of the same dependency at the same time.

However you read it, it contains strong arguments for supporting having multiple versions of the same structuredefinition "in scope" when working with profiles.
