I'm pulling some data from the SMART on FHIR sandbox (patient SMART-1482713, SMART-1551992) and in the data set the patient's FAMILY name is sent as an array (square brackets). However, the humanName data element is specified in FHIR3 as a string.

Is there an error in the way the SMART on FHIR sandbox is presenting the data or am i missing an important detail?

As you will see from the sandbox URL you referenced, this is the DSTU2 sandbox. http://hl7.org/fhir/DSTU2/datatypes-definitions.html#HumanName.family is the relevant documentation showing that this is expected to be an array. This is something that has changed in STU3.
