I was wondering if there were any official sample hl7 messages for each type of each version of the specification that could be used to validate hl7 tooling works correctly.

Yes, you can find the examples on the downloads page in the spec: http://hl7.org/fhir/downloads.html
For previous versions, use the version in the url: http://hl7.org/fhir/STU3/downloads.html

@Jake Aitchison Since you are asking on a FHIR platform, I assumed you meant HL7 FHIR.

@Jake Aitchison You may wish to ask the #V2 stream, or the #CDA stream. All are "HL7" standards, so one has to specify what one is referring to. The 'default' standard being discussed on this forum is 'HL7 FHIR', or 'FHIR' for short.

HL7 is an organization, not a specific standard. HL7 produces a number of standards - v2, CDA, FHIR and others.
