Topic: Which version of FHIR should we go with?
Priya Mathew (Jun 27 2018 at 22:28):
To all the gurus out there:
At the FHIR devDays conference, looks like most of the big vendors are at DSTU 2. We're in the process of setting up a FHIR server and see some new resources in STU3 we could use in our implementation but want to also be able to communicate with most of our current vendors who are at DSTU 2. Any guidance/tips to help us with our decision.
Thank you!

If you are working for the US market go with DSTU2, it is by far the most used one
Grahame Grieve (Jun 28 2018 at 04:12):
well, I think it's not so simple. If you're working on clinical summary, that's argonaut space, and definitely DSTU3. If you working on admin stuff- say: provider directory - then DSTU3 would be appropriate. So you'll need to do a bit more market research
John Moehrke (Jun 28 2018 at 13:14):
All of the IHE "Profiles" of FHIR are using STU3 right now, and expect to transition to R4 late this year or early next year. https://healthcaresecprivacy.blogspot.com/2018/06/presenting-ihe-on-fhir-at-fhir-devdays.html

Thanks for your input, we're an oncology EMR and certainly deal with clinical summaries and a lot of oncology specific data like chemo careplans and cancer diagnosis with TNMStages, etc-yes, looks like we're leaning towards DSTU2

Hi Grahame, did you mean DSTU2 in the argaunaut space?
Lloyd McKenzie (Jun 28 2018 at 18:39):
Different Argonaut initiatives are based on different versions
Eric Haas (Jun 28 2018 at 20:03):
Speaking as the primary author of both guides....USCore is the STU3 equivalent for Argonaut DSTU2
Priya Mathew (Jun 29 2018 at 16:43):
Thanks! all good info for us to make a decision soon.
Kevin Olbrich (Jun 29 2018 at 18:13):
@Priya Mathew Being in the oncology space a bit myself (as a CDS provider), there are a few resources that might be extremely useful to you in 3.0.1 that don't exist in earlier versions. Like PlanDefinition
, which would be useful for modeling chemotherapy regimens.
Priya Mathew (Jun 29 2018 at 20:45):
Yes, we saw that! And that's one of the reasons we wanted to go STU3...

Related question: Does the R4 ballot supercede R3? If so, where is a summary of the deltas?
Lloyd McKenzie (Jul 19 2018 at 17:39):
R4 will supercede R3 when the final version is published in December. At that time, there should be a "changes" view on each resource as there is in R3 with respect to STU2. There will also be a high-level summary of changes of other content. For a detailed list of changes, you'll have to look at the tracker items (because there are literally thousands).
