Topic: UMLS terminology zip download
Merlyn Albery-Speyer (May 27 2021 at 22:36):
Hey there, I'm having no end of problems downloading the UMLS terminology archive here (https://download.nlm.nih.gov/umls/kss/2019AB/umls-2019AB-full.zip). For days now I start the download and sometime in the estimated 6.5h the download fails (it's not a bandwidth issue on my end). Are there any alternate ways of obtaining this file? Thanks! (I asked first on #inferno but it's a bit quite there)

@Merlyn Albery-Speyer I'm wondering (just guessing) if the problem may be due to an authentication issue? You can no longer access the files using the username/password login. You now have to authenticate instead using one of the identity providers, so if you don't have that set up yet that may be the issue. If the issue isn't the authentication, then I'm not sure what it would be. I typically download SNOMED CT, rather than the Metathesaurus, but I haven't had any problems in doing that. Of course, the Metathesaurus download is substantially larger (5.0 GB compared to 502 MB), but I wouldn't expect it to be taking > 6 hours.

It authenticates just fine. Today I've made it further than ever before. 3.1Gb/4.8Gb downloaded in about 6h...

I guess I don't have any further suggestions at the moment - other than patience. :)

Is there a way to download parts of the UMLS as separate ZIP files? In the 'old days' when things used to be made available via FTP it was common for large file downloads to be 'chunked' to make it easier to complete the download. (in fact newer FTP clients have the ability to restart from where they left off)

If I'm not mistaken, you can also download most of the major terminologies including UMLS from from OMOP/OHDSI. They are pre-curated into the CDM model.

Thanks for your advice, folks. For me what worked in the end was to tweak my Mac "Energy Saver" settings to "Prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off". That and a day of waiting.
