Stream: implementers
Topic: SNOMED query API
Dennis Ballance (Sep 05 2018 at 17:57):
Hi, FHIR newbie here. I'm talking with Virginia Tech, maintainers of the veterinary SNOMED extension, about implementing an API that could be used to query for the ancestors and children of a given SNOMED concept identifier. I am wondering if there are FHIR specs that would be particularly useful to reference in designing this API. I saw the announcement from LOINC yesterday, which is what prompted me to think about this. Vet Med doesn't leverage FHIR today, but a potentially public-facing tool such as this would be great to build using FHIR as it would help speed up the API design, and (hopefully) insulate against one-off variations.

For your use-case, you probably want to explore the #terminology stream. But in short, yes, there are FHIR interfaces that would be relevant here. A good starting point is here: http://build.fhir.org/terminology-service.html

Lloyd, thanks. I don't have that stream on my hotlist yet, so I'll add it. Is there a way to move a post to a different stream, or is reposting better? (All of that may be moot if I get what I need from the link you shared, of course!)
Lloyd McKenzie (Sep 05 2018 at 18:53):
No ability to move posts across streams, so you'll need to repost, but hopefully you'll find your initial answers in the spec and can then ask more refined questions :)

Yes, please post (or re-post) in terminology if you have more questions.
Rob Hausam (Sep 12 2018 at 03:54):
I agree with Lloyd that the FHIR terminology service API may be quite useful for what you are wanting to do.

In particular, look here http://build.fhir.org/snomedct.html#implicit with regards implicit ValueSets for SNOMED CT and the ValueSet/$expand operation http://build.fhir.org/valueset-operation-expand.html
