Topic: Patient -- Pronouns
Daniel Tam (Jan 27 2022 at 05:00):
Are any providers here recording patient pronouns? We don't see this as a field in the Patient US Core profile. We're thinking about creating our own extension to record this, but are wondering what others are doing.
Note that this is separate from the Patient.gender field. That field maps to Administrative gender (male, female, other, unknown)
The pronouns would be how the patient wishes to be addressed i.e.:
he/him/his
she/her/hers
they/them/their
Ze/hir/hirs, ze/zir/zirs

PA is working on a standard extension in R4. See the project page here (with linked Jiras)

Here is the draft FHIR extension for pronouns from the GHP project: https://build.fhir.org/branches/FHIR-29673-gender-harmony-updates/extension-individual-pronouns.html. That link is to a branch, which will go away once I merge (at which point you can just see it in the current build).

Does that manage specifying objective (e.g. them) and possessive (e.g. their) forms of a pronoun (e.g. they)?
Richard Townley-O'Neill (Mar 24 2022 at 05:47):
This is a theoretical question.
Cooper Thompson (Mar 24 2022 at 12:59):
No - we just have a single combined field. We did consider that, but with all the different languages and grammars in the world, we ultimately settled on something that was simple and straightforward and based on what existing implementations were doing today.
