Topic: Oncology lesion example?
Tilo Christ (Jun 11 2016 at 01:06):
Hello! Is there an existing example or a working group that is looking at oncological lesions, such as lung nodules? Including their size, volume, location, texture, etc.?
Grahame Grieve (Jun 14 2016 at 03:27):
That would logically be Anatomical Path, but I haven't heard that they're working on it.

there is the CAP/RCPA wotk in the Australian implementation guides.

@Tilo Christ the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (RCPA) have developed a number of structured reporting of cancer protocols which can be found at:
https://www.rcpa.edu.au/Library/Practising-Pathology/Structured-Pathology-Reporting-of-Cancer/Cancer-Protocols
with a specific one on lung cancer at:
https://www.rcpa.edu.au/getattachment/91579f39-e6b0-4c55-81f6-b845674bffe9/Protocol-lung-cancer.aspx
The RCPA have a current project using the colorectal cancer protocol and the prostate cancer protocol which are being modelling using FHIR resources.
Colorectal: https://hl7-fhir.github.io/nehta/nehta-colorectal.html
Prostate: https://hl7-fhir.github.io/nehta/nehta-prostate-radical.html
This is a pilot project where a selected public and private laboratory will be transmitting FHIR artefacts to a selected cancer registry. A subsequent project may look at expanding the development of further cancer protocols.

Thank you everybody for your responses! This is interesting information which I will certainly look at. When I asked my question, I was more thinking about the radiological aspect. E.g. coding the RECIST size of a lesion. Is there any known work on that?
Eric Haas (Jun 21 2016 at 05:24):
I am interested in an example too, this could be useful for publishing in the build.
Katie Wheatley (Nov 08 2017 at 14:40):
Are there any updates on this thread as I am also interested in representing a lesion's size on a patient's forearm. I would need to show that it measures 2cm in length by 3cm in width. Are there any examples of modelling this in FHIR?
Lloyd McKenzie (Nov 08 2017 at 15:01):
You'd have two Observations (length & width) both with an extension pointing to the BodySite instance for the lesion
David Hay (Nov 08 2017 at 17:29):
or a single observation with 2 components (length & width)...
