Topic: Filling identifier column

while migrating data, specific to practitioner, my legacy system has practioner_id column, is it a good idea to go with same column or is there any better idea to go with.
There is a chance that from another facility same practioner_id came in and generating the duplicate issue.
Any thought regarding this.

By populating both the system as well as the value components of the Identifier datatype ( http://build.fhir.org/datatypes.html#Identifier ) one can ensure uniqueness. In general it's a best practice to always populate both to ensure uniqueness.
