The (example) valueset for MessageHeader.event is currently quite small and incomplete (as is expected of an example valueset), but are there plans to flesh out that list to include all of the HL7v2 events? Or are vendors/projects/realms expected to define their own events for everything (seems like a bad idea to re-invent the A01/Admin event each time).
Is there a catalog of HL7-defined MessageDefinitions somewhere?

There are no current plans to expand it as there's been no indication of interest from the implementer community in having a standardized set of events (or message definitions). We can certainly expend more effort on it if the community decides they want to.

there is an event for A01, but generally, no one has indicated that they are using this list yet. Should we take this as evidence that you are?

Nope. Just academic investigation at this point. We have no plans to actually implement FHIR messaging at this time.
