Hi,

We are getting the encounter profile implemented and being into an Outpatient Care, just wanted to have clarity & understanding that Why the Encounter.hospitalization.dischargeDisposition element is a Must Support Element under that profile? Can this be defaulted to the date same as the period element i.e. Same Start and End Date? Please guide.

Thanks in Advance.

Which profile?

Hi @Lloyd McKenzie : It is US Core Encounter Profile...!!! We are implementing the Read and Response operations for US Core Encounter Profile...!!!

Guidance on MustSuppport can be found here: https://www.hl7.org/fhir/us/core/conformance-expectations.html#must-support-elements (just in case you haven't studied that yet)

@René Spronk : Yes, I have gone through the Must Support Element Conformance Expectations link that you have provided. Actually, the question was not in consideration of Must Support but just wanted to have clarity and understanding on Why this particular element (Encounter.hospitalization.dischargeDisposition) is under the Must Support element in common for all under the Encounter Profile.

That's a question best raised under #united states

'Must Support' does not mean that you have always to populate it - it means (as a server) that if you have that value you have to make it available in the FHIR resource.

So if you do not have a discharge disposition for the outpatient encounters in your system it is fine just not to populate FHIR Encounter.hospitalization.dischargeDisposition

(I'd say that outpatient encounter probably would not have the entire hospitalization element - and this is fine for US Core)

and especially: do not try to default or invent a value if you do not have anything in your system
