Topic: Code system for US DEA numbers
Cooper Thompson (Mar 02 2018 at 22:01):
Does anyone know of an official code system for the US DEA numbers? I don't see one in the terminology system registry. https://www.deanumber.com/ looks like the leading candidate based on google, but I'm not familiar with what might be needed on the terminology side to make that somewhat official.

I'd prefer a .gov link for that, but I don't feel strongly about that
Robert McClure (Mar 03 2018 at 00:02):
I feel strongly. That is not what we should use. DOJ controls DEA numbers and DEA is a part of DOJ. This is the landing page: https://www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/drugreg/index.html
Rob Hausam (Mar 03 2018 at 00:07):
DEA numbers are identifiers, not a code system. I believe that the URL that Rob M. referenced would be the best to use for Identifier.system.
Grahame Grieve (Mar 03 2018 at 00:08):
even that page is less then thrilling. It's very definitely a web page not a permlink. Is there anyone at DEA we can request a permalink from? or should we define http://hl7.org/fhir/sid/us-dea ?
Eric Haas (Mar 03 2018 at 00:10):
You can't just go online and look up your DEA like you can your NPI or in my case state vet license. So why not a fhir based uri like we did for SSN (United States Social Security Number http://hl7.org/fhir/sid/us-ssn) ??
http://hl7.org/fhir/sid/us-dea ????
Eric Haas (Mar 03 2018 at 00:11):
At least its consistent
Rob Hausam (Mar 03 2018 at 00:12):
Yes, we might want to go ahead and define that. I'm not aware that the DEA has anything else official, but I guess we could try to check - I don't know any contacts there. I don't think there's a way to do a general search for a DEA (at least not from the official site), but if you know the DEA (like my own) you can verify it at https://apps.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/webforms/validateLogin.jsp
Eric Haas (Mar 03 2018 at 00:13):
I tried to get somebody at CDC to Ok a uri like this instead of the some OID for an IG and they kept passing the buck so I gave up/ ran out of time. It may take a while if we let the feds decide and choose.
Eric Haas (Mar 03 2018 at 00:14):
And thanks Rob I need to do that.... :-) I've been using a handwritten copy of mine forever and never bothered to check if its legit.
Rob Hausam (Mar 03 2018 at 00:15):
If you don't, somebody else might bother :)
