This file doesn't appear to be getting used in the core build, as it contains an invalid binary FHIR contained resource (has a content property rather than the renamed data property)
http://build.fhir.org/json-edge-cases.json

Is this intentional in this example?
Or can I fix the example?

While I'm here, what is choice-elements.json and why is it in the examples-json.zip file?

choice-elements should not be examples-json. It's a processible list of all the paths that have choices, to help with code generation or whatever

and please fix the example. It's not registered as a resource, which is why it's not getting validated

Will commit the fixed example.
Will you do the exclusion for the choice-elements?
(also backbone-elements.json if that is still in there too)
Should I assume that package-min-ver.json is ok to be in there?

thanks and yes I'll exclude it
