Topic: WalMart opens first healthcare storefront
Dave deBronkart (Sep 14 2019 at 14:04):
Is Walmart involved with HL7 at all?
@Grahame Grieve @Brian Kaney @Lloyd McKenzie and the whole FHIR-patient community, the significance of this moment for consumerization of US healthcare cannot be overemphasized. Read this short article about what happened yesterday - Walmart's first free-standing health center (not inside a Walmart store - a separate business)
10,000 square feet! Includes x-rays, dental, optical; price quotes at time of booking; and what prices: $25 for a dental exam including x-rays(!).
Note: this first location is 45 minutes outside Atlanta. I have half a mind to go out there sometime this week.
Lloyd McKenzie (Sep 14 2019 at 14:12):
Not that I know of, but I'd have to assume they have an awareness of FHIR. (It's hard not to in the U.S. at this point.) (If any Walmart folks want to share their thoughts on FHIR either publicly or privately, feel free :>)

Looping @Ryan Howells in to this thread...
Dave deBronkart (Sep 14 2019 at 17:27):
As I said on Twitter: "Yeah, pretty much a big-box department store for healthcare. Convenience & predictable prices.
#consumerization"
Ryan Howells (Sep 14 2019 at 17:44):
Walmart, Walgreens, CVS, Amazon, and many of the other retail / consumer health care businesses have (or are in the process of) learning about (and many are joining) the CARIN Alliance. Of course, we'll make sure they are well aware of FHIR if they aren't already. :) Happy to discuss with you @Dave deBronkart next time we see each other.
Dave deBronkart (Sep 14 2019 at 23:48):
Next time I see you
That would be today, I hope (he said as they make him power down his devices for landing) :-) Or sometime REAL soon.
Note: being part of CARIN does not in any way ensure adoption of anything. I've seen too many rodeos (in any industry) where big players buy tickets for the primary purpose of figuring out whether they really have to DO anything, or can avoid getting in trouble by talking a good game and planning things for "next century" or equivalent.
I'm a bleeping radical, Ryan. Activist. A biting horsefly to people who talk pretty while consumers still suffer. Like my friend Helen in the NHS:
