Does FHIR include anything specific to veterinary medicine? Could/should it?
I ask because on Facebook my attention was just drawn to "www.hitslabs.com/register which facilitates collaboration in the exchange of rabies vaccination records for the purposes of Dog Licensing." Founder Paul Tavolacci says "We will eventually move into human health record exchange! Entities have asked us to build health passports, for instance." Might as well build in FHIR from the ground up!

(Side note: My wife's a retired veterinarian and has always taunted me :-) with the ways veterinary medicine behaves more sensibly than human medicine, largely because of the freedom from insurance as a middleman ... so if this idea goes anywhere, I'll endure years of smug gloating across the dinner table.)
René Spronk (Jul 01 2020 at 13:17):
HL7 standards have always been used in veterinary medicine, and if your were to look at older versions of FHIR you'd see the patient resource supported it out of the box. That's no longer the case for lack of implementation feedback (it would have to be done in extensions). There are some vets that actively take part in the HL7 community. Human healthcare doesn't differ that much from veterinary care (from an HL7 perspective)

Great. I'll encourage him to get over here.
(My wife is of course constantly reminding me of the biological similarities (and differences) with other mammals)
Lloyd McKenzie (Jul 01 2020 at 14:34):
We don't have much (any?) implementation of FHIR in the veterinary world that I'm aware of, so there's certainly a risk that some of our constraints would create issues - anyone who's willing to test out FHIR from a veterinary perspective would be most welcome...
Dave deBronkart (Jul 01 2020 at 14:35):
@Paul Tavolacci has just joined up here, so I'm sure he'll be exploring when the time is right.
René Spronk (Jul 01 2020 at 14:57):
For HL7 v3, I discussed the HL7 models with a tree surgeon. You may think that's a joke, but they have extensive 'patient records', and international standards for capturing data. And no, they didn't end up using HL7, but in terms of content it'd probably work.
Paul Tavolacci (Jul 01 2020 at 19:46):
Interesting string. Anywhere there is a taxonomy for veterinary concepts within HL7?
Grahame Grieve (Jul 01 2020 at 20:26):
welcome @Paul Tavolacci. HL7 itself tries not to do taxonomies unless no one else is going to take it up, and this one is in the SNOMED scope. E.g. https://browser.ihtsdotools.org/?perspective=full&conceptId1=410607006&edition=MAIN/2020-03-09&release=&languages=en for species, and disease codes for vet specific concepts: https://browser.ihtsdotools.org/?perspective=full&conceptId1=111805009&edition=MAIN/2020-03-09&release=&languages=en (I'm not sure about the diagnosis, but I think that the name 'black leg' is sheep specific from my childhood)

I can't help but point out that this would create a disambiguation problem for Confluence's "Tree Branch Notification" emails.

There was an early version of the Symptomatic PHR that was envisioned as a Veterinary Social Health Record (SHR), where pets could 'friend' each other. We've certainly created CCD on FHIR documents for various pets and critters on the farm (mostly cats and turtles, but a few others as well).
