Topic: How to petition for a new "stream"
Hank Lenzi (Nov 17 2021 at 13:47):
Hello -- I can't seem to find a stream about how to petition for a new stream here. Any pointers? Do we ask the Admin?
David Pyke (Nov 17 2021 at 13:49):
YOu can just create them.
Josh Mandel (Nov 17 2021 at 15:23):
But if you have any questions about whether it's a good idea you can ask here :-)
Hank Lenzi (Nov 17 2021 at 20:48):
I did. Now I want to pass the stream's Admin status to another member. How do I do that?
Hank Lenzi (Nov 17 2021 at 20:49):
And how do I delete a stream I created? I can't find this in the Zulip documentation (not for when you are a Member and created a stream)?
Josh Mandel (Nov 17 2021 at 20:56):
Are you describing a public stream or a private stream? I think only organization administrators and perhaps moderators have control over public streams once they are created. (I'm not sure of this, just speaking from intuition; would be good to understand the details of the situation.)
Hank Lenzi (Nov 18 2021 at 15:32):
Hi Josh --
Here's the situation: I am part of the BR-Core working group (we are developing the FHIR infrastructure for Brazil). I was delegated the task to create a private stream (BR-Core), which I did, but now I find that I can't pass on Admin rights to a member of the HL7 Brasil organization.
My options would be:
1) delete the stream (which I can't seem to find out how to do in Zuilp)
or
2) Somehow the Admin overlords pass administrative rights to Neusa Andrade (of HL7 Brasil).
TIA,
Hank
Hank Lenzi (Nov 18 2021 at 15:42):
BTW, who are the Admin overlords here? Who do I get in touch with?
Lloyd McKenzie (Nov 18 2021 at 15:47):
Josh is one. I'm another. However, I don't see a way to delegate admin authority over a single stream. @Josh Mandel?
Josh Mandel (Nov 18 2021 at 15:56):
Yeah, I'm not familiar with any stream ownership model. What specific ability are you looking to "hand over"? In a private stream, any member should be able to invite other members. Are you primary concerned about who is allowed to delete the stream?
Hank Lenzi (Nov 18 2021 at 16:06):
OK, then can you please delete the BR-Core stream so we can redo it with the right person in charge?
Hank Lenzi (Nov 18 2021 at 16:09):
I apologize for this inconvenience.
Lloyd McKenzie (Nov 18 2021 at 16:27):
The point is "there is no one in charge". Everyone in the closed group can invite others to the closed group. In terms of deletion, that's one of the overall Jira admins.
Lloyd McKenzie (Nov 18 2021 at 16:27):
If there are people you want added to the group, ask one of the existing members to add them.
Hank Lenzi (Nov 18 2021 at 16:46):
Got ya. This kinda sucks. I'll see what I can do. Thanks for the help.
Josh Mandel (Nov 18 2021 at 16:58):
What sucks about it? I mean: what are you trying to do that you can't?

I'm trying to delete the stream. Actually, I went to the Zulip dev forum and a thread there suggested archiving the stream. Problem is, I can neither Archive, Rename or Delete the BR-Core stream.
Hank Lenzi (Nov 18 2021 at 17:08):
https://zulip.com/help/archive-a-stream
Hank Lenzi (Nov 18 2021 at 17:09):
I do not want to own the stream, it should be a member of the HL7 Brasil.
Hank Lenzi (Nov 18 2021 at 17:10):
But they were very busy and we had a cohort of students from a FHIR class so I suggested that maybe I could create the stream. And now I am stuck with perpetual ownership of the thing.
Hank Lenzi (Nov 18 2021 at 17:11):
Does that make sense?
Hank Lenzi (Nov 18 2021 at 17:14):
Meanwhile, I'm trying to figure out who are the Zulip higher-ups I can go to to ask for the stream's archiving or deletion.
Hank Lenzi (Nov 18 2021 at 17:16):
I've emailed webmaster@hl7.org and my fingers are crossed. Such a bothersome little problem I've gotten myself into...
Josh Mandel (Nov 18 2021 at 17:25):
The point is, streams don't have owners. I'll delete it for you though.
Josh Mandel (Nov 18 2021 at 17:26):
Done (technically "archived", but with no historical content these are equivalent).
Hank Lenzi (Nov 18 2021 at 17:30):
Thanks (it's not clear we will stick to Zulip, so that's why we needed that).
Hank Lenzi (Nov 18 2021 at 17:30):
We couldn't have "BR-Core" sticking around.
