Topic: Hot Beverage FHIR IG is live!

Due to overwhelming demand to have a way to communicate with coffee machines via FHIR, the Hot Beverage FHIR IG is live. This IG implements RFC 2324 to give full morning pleasure to FHIR users and implementers alike. And, thanks to @John Moehrke it has full auditing so no worries about unauthorized coffee drinking will slip by. This desperately needed FHIR IG can be found at https://build.fhir.org/ig/DavidPyke/HotBeverage/ We will be looking to move it to HL7 and normative stats as soon as we get a good cup of espresso

If I want to model the size of the beverage, would I rather use a quantity with the "ml" UCUM unit, or go for a coding of "grande", "latte", and "venti"? Should we align with the SDC IG to capture beverage consumption?

That's a good question. We should bring this to the appropriate workgroup for detailed investigation. We may need a DAM to really determine the answer

What workgroup is responsible for food and beverage standards? Would that be Patient Administration?

Can we rearrange so it's RESTful. So POST /Espresso
and a query to check status Get /Espresson?identifier=mycoffeeorder

we initially did have a FHIR Resource... but doing this as an IG was more ... easy.

Key is that FHIR is used to heat the hot beverage

I have put together the first draft of a Questionnaire. Maybe we can discuss on the first call of this IG (there are going to be calls, right?)

This is splendid and I'm really glad to see that it was developed using FHIR Shorthand. As one of the creators and developers of FSH and SUSHI, I will claim that I had some part in helping to make this Hot Beverage FHIR IG a reality. I feel that I have now reached the pinnacle of my career and I look forward to the day when my grandchildren ask me to tell them that story about FHIR Shorthand and its role in the birth of the Hot Beverage IG. Thank you, @David Pyke and @John Moehrke for reminding us all why we're doing this very important work.

I tried to figure out a way to fold in sushi to the narrative, but ran out of time. Mostly I ran up against my experience with sushi tended to be with Tea.

OMG. You guys do realize how this is full circle back to the Tech Model Railroad Club, where they implemented a (hardware) hack into the ancient Coke machine, so they could tell from a distance whether it was empty, right?

is there a track for this at the upcoming FHIR Connectathon? @David Pyke

view this post on Zulip David Pyke (Apr 16 2021 at 18:25):

We're still having issues finding a supplier of FHIR enabled coffee machines for testing. I think we should shoot for September

If we can't make it about technology, maybe we can make it about family and SDOH? https://loinc.org/64566-3/
