Topic: HL7 Engagement
Grahame Grieve (Oct 04 2017 at 23:46):
Does anyone know of anything like an 'HL7 for dummies' that describes to someone from outside of HL7 how to get engaged with HL7, either virtually, or at a face to face meeting?
René Spronk (Oct 05 2017 at 06:14):
HL7 has a newbies tutorial at WGMs. Not sure if we have that same info in a different format.
Jens Villadsen (Oct 05 2017 at 10:10):
I've spend at couple years searching of it ...
Michelle (Moseman) Miller (Oct 05 2017 at 13:50):
I recently put together an introductory session focused on HL7 and FHIR (presented at Cerner's developer conference). It was inspired by a series of inputs, such as:
- HL7 FAQ, which includes a link to http://www.hl7.org/permalink/?HL7OrgAndProcessPresentation (HL7.org > About > FAQ > General HL7 FAQ > Organization > How is HL7 Organized?) -- Note: I did pass along some feedback to Hans that the FAQs seem to be lacking content for FHIR, yet have FAQ around V3/RIM, V2, CDA, etc.
- WGM First Time Attendees presentation(s), http://www.hl7.org/documentcenter/public/calendarofevents/FirstTime/First%20Time%20Attendees%20Presentation%20(201709).ppt (HL7.org > Event > WGM > First Time Attendees' Presentation)
- Various other HL7 documents, like the GOM, HL7 Essential Requirements, Glossary of Terms etc.
- Introduction to FHIR
etc.

There used to be HL7 Ambassador programs and there is a discussion on starting them up again. I'm not sure of the content that was delivered, but I think there may have been some that may be what you are looking for. Maybe HQ has some of the presentations that were delivered.

This is an excellent question. I was approached today by someone who wants to get involved for blood and derived products, but doesn't know where to start.

@Elliot Silver re blood and blood products, OO has just approved to submit a FHIR Proposal request for a new resource currently titled BiologicallyDerivedProduct. My organization's need is to describe stem cells (from peripheral blood, bone marrow, or cord blood) to be transplanted from a donor to a recipient. But we recognize it can also be used for blood transfusions, solid organ transplant, etc. So point your contact to OO and the proposal found at http://wiki.hl7.org/index.php?title=BiologicallyDerivedProduct_FHIR_Resource_Proposal. We'd love to get more input on this.
Bob Milius (Oct 05 2017 at 21:02):
Re HL7 engagement, I've been introducing HL7 FHIR to NMDP (National Marrow Donor Program), and the CIBMTR (Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research) with a series of locally focused talks. For a couple of years, I was the only one from our organization going to HL7 meetings. Now we're going to FHIR DevDays in Nov for the first time and we've registered 7 people to go. So my recommendation is to help potential 'evangelists' with a tool kits of presentations that can be reused and tailored for different organizations. What I've been doing is giving a 10 minute background on what HL7 is, another 30 minutes on FHIR, and then show use cases and examples of how it can be used in our organization, along with xml/json code snippets with locally relevant data. A lot of material about HL7 and FHIR is stuff I've reused from material I've found online that is shareable through Creative Commons license, with attribution.
Bob Milius (Oct 05 2017 at 21:14):
oh, and ClinFHIR is a wonder tool to demonstrate how resources are built and reference each other.
Elliot Silver (Oct 05 2017 at 22:08):
Thanks @ Bob Milius, I'll pass this on -- I think this is exactly the kind of resource they'd like to work on.
