Grahame Grieve (Feb 08 2019 at 04:23):
Hey all. Mr Histalk (of histalk2.com fame) and I have been chatting about bad FHIR puns, and we're going to make a list of puns seen or heard at HIMSS. The worse they are the better we like them. If you see a cringeworthy FHIR pun or riff, mention it here - thanks (source attribution not necessary)
Grahame Grieve (Feb 08 2019 at 05:02):

Are the Google Data Analytics folks presenting anywhere? (from the FHIR bulk data stuff)
Paul Church (Feb 09 2019 at 03:10):
There's a Google Cloud booth with a variety of demos going on. In Monday's Cloud Computing Forum, there's a sepsis prediction talk (session CLO09) with Kurt Ericson. Beyond that, there's just so much stuff happening at HIMSS that it's hard to summarize.

Grahame Grieve (Feb 15 2019 at 10:50):
well, HIMSS was the usual mad house, though attendance was actually down a little this year - just ~43,000 people. 10% international (don't know whether that includes exhibitors from over seas for US vendors - if it doesn't, then the real intl attendence could be 20%)
Grahame Grieve (Feb 15 2019 at 10:52):
The big news of the conference was FHIR. In fact, I asked a few people what were the 3 buzzwords from the conference, and I got
1. FHIR
2. AI
2. either Data Analytics or Block Chain
If I asked what were the 3 big themes, it would be some combination of FHIR / Interop, AI/Data Analytics(/cloud), and Workflow improvements)
Grahame Grieve (Feb 15 2019 at 11:00):
The big news dominating discussion was the NPRM that proposes requiring FHIR for use. Also there was the letter from CMS laying out the HL7 work program it is interested in - mostly FHIR. Also, the opening keynote - moderated by HIMSS CEO Hal Wolfe, and featuring Seema Verma, Gov Leavitt, Karen De Salvo, and Aneesh Chopra - featured a discussion about how Consumer directed Exchange might disrupt the healthcare market place. The context was all FHIR related, and someone counted for me, they mentioned FHIR 17 times.
Grahame Grieve (Feb 15 2019 at 11:01):
Aneesh stated something like 'there's no format war, like there was with VHS and Beta-max. It's going to be FHIR - there's no further discussion'
Grahame Grieve (Feb 15 2019 at 11:08):
Thanks to all the people who contributed through presentations and exhibition hall explanations of FHIR
Grahame Grieve (Feb 15 2019 at 11:09):
To entertain you all: I was walking the floor, and noticed an interop SaaS company I had not seen before, so stopped to get a sense of their scope. While reading their signs, one of the booth staff approached me and asked if I would like to learn about FHIR
Yunwei Wang (Feb 15 2019 at 14:48):
So what did you reply?
Lloyd McKenzie (Feb 15 2019 at 15:44):
It might be interesting to know what they were teaching...
Grahame Grieve (Feb 15 2019 at 21:32):
I didn’t have time to find out, so I declined and thanked her and moved on
Brian Postlethwaite (Feb 15 2019 at 22:17):
That would have been gold to capture on video!
René Spronk (Feb 17 2019 at 10:34):
Good show ;-) .. could you elaborate a bit on the "workflow improvements" , the #3 on your own 'big themes' list?
Grahame Grieve (Feb 17 2019 at 13:21):
plenty of interest in HIMSS at integration tools and decision support services aimed at improving clinical workflows.
Grahame Grieve (Feb 17 2019 at 13:22):
rather than replacing systems completely
John Silva (Feb 17 2019 at 21:33):
Hnnm, that sounds like there is still a need to work (integrate) with 'old' HL7 V2 legacy systems ...
Grahame Grieve (Feb 18 2019 at 02:49):
there's a pile of work to do there. Look for some real push on that this year
