Topic: Desktop Application
Grahame Grieve (Apr 20 2017 at 22:21):
Those of you using the Desktop application - if you haven't upgraded to the electron client, now is the time to do so. see https://github.com/zulip/zulip-electron/releases
Richard Kavanagh (Apr 21 2017 at 13:00):
Now if there was a version that worked on my ipad.....
Yunwei Wang (Apr 21 2017 at 14:15):
I use my browser (firefox).
Grahame Grieve (Apr 22 2017 at 22:48):
the problem with the browser approach is that the page is reloaded every time, and the zulip page takes a looong time to load
Yunwei Wang (Apr 24 2017 at 14:07):
Just tried the latest one. It is much better than previous version. I will see how much memory does it use.
Josh Mandel (Apr 24 2017 at 14:38):
the page is reloaded every time
@Grahame Grieve every time that what occurs? I don't notice this reloading in my browser (and a manual ctrl-r
takes about 3sec for me)
Lloyd McKenzie (Apr 24 2017 at 14:57):
My problem is memory - in Chrome the app frequently gets close to 2GB
Yunwei Wang (Apr 24 2017 at 16:10):
Memory usage in Chrome is a problem. Hopefully, the desktop one will be less memory footprint.
Josh Mandel (Apr 24 2017 at 16:10):
Would be good to know; since it uses electron, I wouldn't necessarily expect a difference.
Yunwei Wang (Apr 24 2017 at 16:58):
There are difference. I opened zulip on desktop app and browser (chrome) at the same time and leave it untouched for about 1 hour. The chrome tab uses about 1G memory and desktop app uses 300M.
Josh Mandel (Apr 24 2017 at 17:37):
Thanks for the report @Yunwei Wang!
Yunwei Wang (Apr 24 2017 at 17:39):
Also interestingly, zulip web page on Firefox tab doesn't have the same problem as chrome. So I think maybe a Chrome issue?
Josh Mandel (Apr 24 2017 at 17:41):
Could be! I wonder if @Tim Abbott or the zulip team has noticed Chrome using dramatically more memory...
Grahame Grieve (Apr 24 2017 at 18:56):
@Josh Mandel - related every time is when I open Zulip on iOS. At present, my view is that zulip is unusable on iOS - it takes around 60sec to get to show me what my current view is. And then, if I switch apps, it will start again.
Tim Abbott (Apr 28 2017 at 17:19):
Zulip's new iOS app should be in the app store in a few days, which will likely help :)
Tim Abbott (Apr 28 2017 at 17:22):
I think there's a recent version of Chrome that just leaks memory; we've had some reports of Zulip using a lot more memory than it used to in Chrome (even in servers running a fixed Zulip version). Typically, those users also found GMail was consuming several GB as well. Apparently, it can help to close and make a new tab (i.e. it appears Chrome is leaking memory across reloads of the browser window, which is definitely a bug). In theory, Zulip should not be a particularly memory-intensive application (and it certainly wasn't a few months ago).
Michael Osborne (Apr 28 2017 at 22:12):
I had a similar experience with the now
auto-updater which is an electron app. It used 400 Gb of my download limit due to this issue before I got wise an uninstalled it.
Lloyd McKenzie (Apr 29 2017 at 23:09):
@Tim Abbott I run both gmail and zulip. gmail hasn't gotten any bigger than usual, but Zulip definitely has. However, accept that it may be Chrome's issue rather than Zulip's. Has the issue been reported to Google?
Grahame Grieve (Apr 30 2017 at 23:30):
thanks very much @Tim Abbott. btw, is this one of the more busy Zulip implementations?
Tim Abbott (May 01 2017 at 04:18):
@Lloyd McKenzie we've seen open Chrome bugs about the issue, but haven't reported something specific. My sense is that they won't investigate anything without clear proof that it's Chrome, and that takes a lot of work to produce.
Tim Abbott (May 01 2017 at 04:19):
@Grahame Grieve it's hard to know for sure; from https://chat.fhir.org/stats it looks like traffic levels aren't unusually high, but you do have a few thousand inactive users. I suspect you folks will greatly appreciate Zulip 1.6 (coming out soon), which will fix a bunch of perf issues related to having thousands of users.
Tim Abbott (May 01 2017 at 04:20):
(There are plenty of Zulip instances that do a few thousand messages/week, even ones with only ~10 people in them)
Grahame Grieve (May 01 2017 at 04:31):
performance fixes sounds good
Yunwei Wang (May 01 2017 at 18:05):
I will write a post every week to keep myself active.
