Topic: how mature are our hooks?

Feedback from the CDS Hooks ballot earlier this year, resulted in this Hook Maturity Model which guides a hook author through the process of maturing a proposed hook and clearly labels the maturity level.

We're now faced with the challenge of labeling our hooks that pre-existed before this model. We've got a gh issue and PR queued up to state that patient-view is the most mature (and is almost ready for a ballot), medication-prescribe is immature, but has seen testing, and order-reviewis mostly untested. Is this accurate?

view this post on Zulip Josh Mandel (Dec 12 2018 at 22:41):

I believe that's accurate, especially considering that the sandbox supports medication-prescribe bot not order-review.

Thanks, Josh! (I hadn't considered which hooks were supported by the sandbox).

If you consider the Da Vinci Project's Coverage Requirements Discovery (CRD) IG, you'll see that it defines use cases for both medication-prescribe and order-review, as well as new hooks for appointment-booking, encounter-start and encounter-discharge. The MITRE RI for the CRD IG currently supports medication-prescribe and order-review.

Is there a path for retiring hooks in this model? For example, there have been a lot of discussions about medication-prescribe being an unnecessary version of order-review. Speaking of order-review, I'm aware of at least 2 EMRs who've implemented this hook either in production or close to it. I would consider it at least documented.

Thanks, @Richard Ettema . The CRD IG is very thoroughly written! This Hook Maturity Model is how we should evaluate maturity. We need to get these CRD-proposed written up on cds-hooks.org. It seems like there's a thorough plan for testing the MITRE RI's and other CRD implementations. As that testing progresses, we should use it to also advance stated maturity according to this schema.

Hey @Alex Tatiyants ! There is not, yet, but we do have gh issue #433 asking the same question, and PRs creating order-select and order-sign hooks which are explicitly intended to more clearly demarcate the workflow step. Any thoughts on how to deprecate/retire a hook?

Thank you, I'm changing the (proposed) published maturity model level of order-review from 1-Submitted to 3-Considered per your feedback.

Also, congrats on your new album!

@Isaac Vetter I don't have any specific ideas on how best to retire a hook, aside from setting its status to "depreciated" and, if possible, specifying what a replacement hook would be. Also, what would we expect EMRs/CDS services to do if a hook they're using got retired?

On a separate note, thank you for the note on the album - took a long time to write!

I predict there's going to be a lot of FHIR development happening to that album over the coming year. I really liked it :)
